DD is a very calculating man it seems. The way he says he saw law as his second or just like him. He said he was disappointed in Law for not being calculating and taking a chance on Luffy. DD knows the Strawhats have come through some incredible situations and should not be underestimated. He wants to protect himself as much as possible.
I say whatever plot protection and yadablabla. Sure thinking logically in some situations its seems impossibl but isn't that really the point of these shonen and some manga? To overcome the impossible? So whatever. I find that a fallible excuse.
Now IMO I think DD is pverestimating the Strawhats. Overestimating and underestimating pretty much have the same effect. The result of overestimating is because one thinks too much. That is DD. He is an underworld mastermind controlling from both sides. One as a celestial dragon and schichibukai and the other as the "joker". He is a very calculating man. And instead of acting on instinct like Luffy (who only has one objective in mind) DD just wants to try and protect himself as much as possible while when the quickest solution would have been to eliminate Luffy from the get go.
