Why is Canada a running gag?

Canada and Canadians are used as running gags a lot in mostly American T.V shows. Why is this?

The most popular example I can think of is Robin, in 'How I met your mother'. I have seen it elsewhere though (enough times for me to make a thread about it).

Most Americans think that USA is better than Canada and that's why they use it as a running gag in american shows. I'm Canadian and I find the jokes to be pretty funny

Seriously though, it's just how it's always been, but we're always there for our American friends and anyone else who needs us. It's like joking/teasing a sibling.

canada is just canada, theres no other way to explain, its easy to poke and make fun of, for example south park destroys that shit everytime lmaooooo.
