first, its a freaking year of the dead of the love ones, it should be the day to remembered them, but why people gave candies and stuff ii dont understand it, It doesnt make sense, i live in philippines what we do is that we put candles at side infront of our door, to show a respect to our dead love ones, there was some old story that in november 1 and 2 the portal to the spirit is wide open which means ghost can go went back and forth in a short amount of time, putting candles was a show of respect and the way that it was saying you remember them and the feelings you have during that day can reach them for remembering them, but still i dont understand why in U.S they give candies and stuff whats more halloween costume, i dont know but its kinda like a disrespect to the spirits, im just saying is that, it happens once a year, atleast give that time to show your love ones who past a way the remembering they deserve. I mean we all wanna die that atleast we did something good to remember us right?

You might not see the appeal but to me Halloween is awesome.

I celebrate that and I also go to celebrate Dia de Los Muertos, which honors the dead.

Your thread got derailed a bit; thanks Okami. You bring up a legitimate point though. Halloween, All Saint's Eve, All Hallows Eve; these are very old and special traditions that have been turned into a capitalist money trap. It has it's roots in the very ancient Celtic pagan harvest festival, Samhain, to signify the coming of winter months. After Christianity was introduced into Gaelic culture it slowly transitioned into a day to remember the dead. While many of the old traditions exist, like carving a turnip to ward off evil spirits, it is very different than it ever was. If it makes you feel better, there is a resurgence of traditional practices in Europe and even America.

Halloween is boring. It's nice for children when they have the chance to dress-up and have fun, but that's it. I don't celebrate holidays anyway, except for christmas to a small extend extend. Not because of the original religious meaning, only for the by Coca-Cola coined atmosphere, the music and having a good time with family and friends.
