Naruto is a shonen manga and thus, there’s little to no development on the romance in the series. The “love” that a character feels for another is often one-sided, and it won’t necessarily be reciprocated. It doesn’t have to be. There is absolutely no problem with any of the characters remaining single. I believe that the ending of Naruto (assuming that “The Last” is canon) will have the characters remaining single, or pairings remain ambiguous and open-ended. I’m personally very satisfied to have an ending like that.
It is without doubt that fandoms (especially on a magnitude of Naruto’s) will have people “shipping” regardless but eventually, it culminates into character-bashing, hatred towards other real-life people and bouts of immaturity that are just not cool. People are entitled to ‘ship’ and have differing opinions and that’s perfectly OK. But when all this negativity arises, it’s totally not OK. Sometimes I feel that people reserve more energy for bad-mouthing and bashing other humans than actually focusing on their own ‘ships’. Really, get a life.
