I'm really surprised that most people think that Madara was believed to be dead after the battle against Hashirama. Of course, he was believed to be dead by the rest of the world, the clan etc. No one wanted him to be able to disturb the peace again but...
I think after their fight, Hashirama was fully aware of him having survived. Why? Simply, because of the general rule between shinobi that the enemies' body has to be destroyed. I can not really imagine that Hashirama killed him and simply walked away, letting his body sit there. He would at least make sure it (and especially not the eyes) won't fall into enemy hands.
Another reason why I believe he knew he was alive is the ability to sense their chakra. Don't tell me he went into hiding for decades without ever using any chakra. Not with all the experiments he was doing.
So it could be either way:
-Hashirama was too wounded and busy sealing the kyuubi so he forgot to check things (unlikely, not as the hokage, he wouldn't forget such important things)
-he let him live, didn't have the heart to kill him (he was still remembering their friendship) and told him to stay away from the village
And the result was that he survived longer than Hashirama himself and made the moonseye plan while hiding completely. And Konoha wasn't attacked by him again, even not after Hashirama's death. That's why I believe in a silent agreement between them. Everyone else thought he died though.
I'm also very sure we will get that shown in the upcoming flashbacks.
