Why hasn't this happened yet?

Most long running anime's that I have seen do a alternate time-line arc or movie at some point in the anime's life.

Curious as to why One Piece has yet to do this. It has so much to work with that i find myself wanting it to happen badly. Biggest event i'd wanna see is Ace survive Marineford and see how powerful he ends up and the changes brought about by it.

OP has the best story, why ruin the experience. Their Edo-era fillers were bad enough.

IMO He should do a side story if Luffy & Ace chose the Marine pathway.

A litttle part of me will always hate Oda for killing off Ace and Sabo, although I think Sabo survived and was saved by Dragon and is now part of the revolutionary army.
