Wanted to clear up why Hashirama was panting.

The reason why Hashirama was panting was not cause he was tired per say. The reason for his panting is due to him using a massive amount of his chakra to suppress/immobilize Madara.

Considering Edo Madara = His chakra + Uchiha strong chakra boost. Hashirama must have nearly Drained his Capacity to suppress Madara.

Same logic can be applied to Shikimaru Binding jutsu.

The Stronger the Target the More Chakra it takes to hold them

Example:

Shikamaru holding down Hidan

Notice in this image he struggles to contain Hidan.

Second Example:

Minato and Kushina Suppressing the Nine Tails:

Notice Minato is focusing hard to keep it suppressed along with Kushina and others

Now Imagine Hashirama trying to contain someone who = his chakra + boosted by Uchiha strong potent chakra. Even in Edo State his Chakra levels must have been nearly gone

thoughts?

I agree with the concept you have. It's the same concept as lifting heavy weights. If you walk in a gym and try to lift something that's near your max, naturally while doing so you will appear to be tired and struggling even though you clearly aren't tired since you just got there.

However I don't agree that this is why Hashirama was panting. I think he honestly was panting because Kishi just decided to draw him like that. He hasn't been very consistent with what Edo are supposed to be able to do/not do, and I think he's been doing so to help with plot. It would be kind of anti-climatic if Hashirama appeared fine and at 100% when Madara ended up being revived because then there would be less of a need to worry about it.

The fact that Hashirama, who's been stated to be the only one capable of defeating Madara, looked as if he was near his end when Madara found new strength gives the climatic feeling of hopelessness for the SA (note this is the same reason Naruto was shown to appear drained and Sasuke's attempt to stop Madara appear feeble). I think Kishi did this to add more drama and anticipation for what the SA will do to counter Madara as the story progresses. You know the whole "with all hope seemingly lost, what will they do?" thing
