He wouldn't have made it through the shield if it wasn't for Kamui.
Except the last one, which was a direct hit. He would have been disintegrated.
Of course it was, Gai had a clear path to Madara, no reason not to hit him directly if he could. Now if Madara was completely incased inside his TSB even then, from what was shown, i think Gai would break through at least one side of it after a few hits of night elephant hitting Madara inside or quickly taking advantage of the opening he made and rush in for a direct hit like he did in the manga.
