Why dragonball (Z)?

I have been wondering this question for a while... And as a hardcore dragonball fan that has rewatched at least three times every episode of dragonball and dragonball z, im ashamed to admit why akira toriyama decided to name it with the z letter.. What does the Z mean? Also they call the protagonists the Z fighters.. But I never was sure why..

acctually i was woundering for that a long time, and the only reason i could find is because in the sage of majimbu gohan take out the Z sword that the only evidence i could give you it might be a concidence but still is called like the show so it has to have a meaning.

when he made dragon ball z, the z wasnt supposed to be there. technically, its just dragon ball and dragon ball gt. they have been only called z fighters in the games really and in the wiki i guess. z sword is probably just coincidence

my guess is that it was probably supposed to be dragonball 2 and someone misread it as z instead of 2.

I know for some guys, they might think that it doesnt really matter, but for the hardcore fans it might matter,lol. Akira probably used the letter Z sort of like an evolution from dragonball...?

GT actually stands for "Grand Tour"

It means absolutely nothing.

You could ask the same of the Naruto series, why did it have to go to "Naruto Shippuden" ?
Thats because of the Time-skip, so lets just say the same applies to Z & GT.
