The only time they fought in close range was when they were in base. The other time they were close was in the beginning, where Sasuke teleported behind Naruto, and hit him with Chidori. If he had his sword then Sasuke could have pierced him through his head or heart and Naruto would die. hence Kishimoto making Sasuke lose his sword right before the battle.
