Have you guys noticed? Most if not all the characters whose pasts we've seen have been messed up.

Law
Chopper
Luffy
Nami
Sanji
Zoro
Sabo
Ace
Franky
Rebecca
X Drake
Doflamingo
Kyros
Hancock

and many more

Also those who we haven't seen but Oda has drawn them as children...

Akainu
Mihawk
Garp
Aokiji
BB
Kid
Jinbe

And many more

The only one who i can recall having a decent childhood is Kizaru

So whats up with Oda's little fetish?

Um, maybe because they live in the age of pirates and pirates generally aren't the nicest people?

They have messed up childhoods because they live in a messed up world with a bunch of messed up people in it. It's simple as that.

I think Oda is trying to emphasize that no matter how shitty your past is, you can still achieve your goals/dreams (especially with the SH's). Who knows, maybe Oda himself had a rough childhood?

Damn, nice avatar.

Based on that logic every single character should have a messed up childhood. This makes no sense considering that many of these fvcked up childhoods aren't fvcked up because of a fvcked up persons influence. Take Zoro for example. He had it hard because of losing Kuina. Shit is happening to everyone and not just because the people thet'te affiliated with are "fcked up".

Not to mention the thread isn't about why their childhoods are messed up its about why Osa is giving everyone messed up childhoods.

Zoro doesn't have a messed up childhood. Kuina was a friend he looked up to, who happened to die by an accident. That's nothing compared to most characters. Law, Robin, Nami, the shandians are far greater victims (politics and natural disaster).

It's a whole world based on poverty, corruption, and piracy. Believe it or not, it's a lot like the real world.

Yes but the fact remains that Kuina died. For a child to lose a close friend who he shared dreams with is messed up. As you stated, Kuina died by accident so that had nothing to do with any messed up person killing her unlike Sabo.

Because bad things happen to everyone. It's the same in real life, unless you think there are people in this world with 100% perfect, painless lives.

Im pretty sure everyone in real life don't lose their mother and kill their father as a little kid...atleast i didn't. Maybe its just me. Theres a difference between bad things and tragic things.

No, but many, many people do. The number of people who have ****ed up childhoods are the vast minority dude. I guarantee if you go around America alone, you're gonna find at least a couple thousand people who lost a parent or other important family member when they were young.

Most talented or strong characters are from having bad experiences during childhood. With such things happen, they are tend to be motivated to go forward either for right or false route of goal in life. Doffy's worse experience leads him to be a psychopath, while Luffy's childhood moment urges him to search for unlimited freedom.

It's rare for normal person without much struggle in life will strive to excellency. Though, for instance of contradictory is Hody Jones, which he never directly had experienced with human cruelness done onto him but he still opted to kill human with an empty reason just because people around him said so. Not very appealing for a good character.
