Why does naruto seem to be weaker when his friends are around

I have noticed that he drops his guard and gets kinda retarded when his friends are in the mix like he subconsciously wants them to contribute, I think he's stronger when he's alone and doesn't have backup

That is so true and I have also been thinking about this myself. I think he drops his guard a bit because when his friends are around he doesn't want them to get in his way. If they do they can get hurt or worse, so instead he lets them to most of the damage while he just stands back and acts retarded.

Maybe, maybe it's because he doesn't want to show how fodder his friends are when close to him. Some are fodder even far from him, so he doesn't want to make them feel bad. This or he is really just stupid.
