I don't particularly like or dislike Kakashi,
But I don't understand why he keeps blaming himself for the separation/disfunction of team 7 (as mentioned in episode 214)?

Some people say that other sensei's like Asuma and Gai are more competent but I just think that Kakashi was unlucky.

1) It wasn't Kakashi's fault that Sasuke left the village. Sasuke had his mind set from the get-go (before being part of team 7) to gain power at all costs and kill Itachi. Two main factors that triggered Sasuke's desire to join Orochimaru were the curse seal+Itachi's sudden appearance in part 1, both which Kakashi couldn't do anything about.

2) It wasn't Kakashi's fault that his students didn't particularly get a long. Naruto and Sasuke's rivalry was too much and it caused a lot of problems. Their personalities clashed all the time, not to mention Sakura's unrequited obsession/love to Sasuke.

In comparison to team 7, other teams like Asuma's and Gai's get along well together. And I think that if any other sensei would have been in Kakashi's place he/she would have done a worse job.

What do you guys think?

I also agree. He was just unlucky. But he blames himself because it was his team and he had every responsibility. But their rivalry was inevitable and so was Sasuke's Revolt. Its only natural to blame himself. He thinks he did not pyt enough effort in keeping his team together. I would say he is just unlucky.

I actually recall earlier, before shippuden it being stated by one of the Jounins that their rivalry was healthy, that it would encourage them to become stronger.
You must remember this is a ninja society, Kakashi is no counsellor, nor would they have anything like that in a violence-based world. He could do nothing, but I suspect it`s just all because Sasuke had a crappy childhood and split the team himself by being selfish.
Naruto at least is healthy, he`s a good person despite his chidhood. Sakura just had a first-crush, as is also healthy and normal. It is Sasuke`s fault, Kakashi probably only feels guilty as he kinda tried to mind them. In one episode before shippuden Kakashi gives Naruto fruit in a flashback, telling him to eat healthy, thus showing Kakashi cares more than about their strength or as a teacher, kinda like One-Piece "nakama".

Kay, too much writing, ugh, sorry, mind just burned up *bangs head off keyboard* It makes sense in my mind I`m sure!!! :ghehe: I`ll stfu now.

tl;dr It`s Sas-kays fault for being selfish and a crappy childhood.

Well as their sensei... seeing how much Naruto & Sakura hurt when Sasuke left... He just probably feels that he could have done more to stop Sasuke from going to Orochimaru or even try encouraging them to work together ... It's no-one's fault but Fugaku's U_U

Kakashi is of the militaristic mindset. He is responsible and accountable for their actions because he is their leader. Even though some of their actions were "normal" he still had some control over them. Anything the team does is a reflection of its leader. If anyone from the team becomes insubordinate then in theory Kakashi is a bad sesei and is unfit to teach.

In theory.
