Why does Jiraiya never help out

Don't get me wrong, I love Jiraiya. But he oftentimes doesn't do anything when he's needed...

-Chunin Exams arc: Why didn't Jiraiya do anything to stop Orochimaru or Gaara?
-Sasuke retrieval arc: Jiraiya could have solo'd the Sound 5 and Sasuke but instead Tsunade sent out a genin team led by a Chunin with no experience
-Kazekage rescue arc: Where the hell was Jiraiya
-Sasuke and Sai arc: They knew they might be dealing with Orochimaru, why didn't Jiraiya volunteer...?
-Hidan and Kakuzu arc: Why didn't jiraiya help out

Just posting some thoughts...please don't flame me ._.

with such trivial matters when he's getting it on with da women.

Legit question. First of all Jiraiya was almost never present at the village. He was going around the world writing his book and searching for answers. The rest is just plot, if Jiraiya interfered everytime there wouldnt be any plot. Example, Jiraiya suddenly arrives in Konoha the second after Hiruzen is killed and the Orochimaru fight is over. If he was at the village Hiruzen and Jiraiya would have soloed Orochimaru neg-diff. Plot, thats all.

Nobody knows where the hell he is most of the time. Probably too far to do anything about those incidents.

well forthe chuunin exams arc he helped out the villagers by taking out some snakes but he should have been with hiruzen

Jiraiya was known as Konoha's biggest information gatherer; he was probably trying to gather information and didn't know/wasn't in Konoha/couldn't be reached in time, especially on the Akatsuki which lead to his death.

Thats right, he would have easily defeated pain if he could have stopped focusing on Konan and started focusing on the fight.

Good point...Jiraiya was always going around the world, searching for answers, conducting 'research' for his novels, and gathering intel.

just like others have stated its plot. All those arcs were crucial to character development for naruto and everyone else for that matter. Hiruzen was the first time naruto dealt with someone close to him dying. That affected him a lot. And the sound 5 gave crucial character development to all 6 of them. You do bring up an good point though. Also i agree that he was probably spying on akatsuki and writing his novels. Jmans an outstanding spy
