Why does Hiruzen care for Uchiha?

It doesn't make any sense.

His sensei Tobirama did not care for Uchiha.

His master Hashirama was like "meh... union or not we're still better"

His subordinates didn't care.

So why does he?

Senju and Uchiha were like oil and water. That's why Hashirama and Tobirama couldn't care for them; they spent their lives fighting against the one and only clan that could oppose them.

Hiruzen, however, wouldn't have any excuse if he didn't care for them.
