Why Do We Need Both Light & Darkness To Be Balanced?

If light represents positivity, while darkness represents negativity, why do we need both? Can't we balanced only on light? What would it mean if we have too much light, and not enough darkness, and vice versa?

Only thing I can think of is that too much light or positivity is boring.
