The defenition of good is a morally correct action and/or an action in order to benefit another.

When commiting "acts of kindess" do we do it to be helpful and kind, or do we do for ourselves, because we feel rewarded after helping another person?

We do it cos we're human, most times its not premeditated (as an act of kindness) stuffs happen and it turns out you've done a kind deed, kind deeds don't necessarily feel rewarding but they often do

We do good because we want to be like Naruto and secretly talk no jutsu everyone and convert them to the church of naruto thus averting WW3.

Why do we do good things for others?

Kin Selection evolved as a way for mammals to support each other in order for more of the population to survive against nature. Cooperation, rather than domination, allowed for two competitors of the same species to each gain resources, albeit less than if you were the dominator, and the competitor was passive. So we know that when we go out of our way to do good things for people or cooperate, we actually get a rush of "feel good" hormones swimming around in our brain. This is nature's way of telling you "this is how you help your species survive".

But not all people get this response, thus have less inclination to be altruistic or cooperate: psychopaths.

Because like any other species we do it out of survival and preservation of the human race.

We do it to make ourselves feel better because we feel better knowing that someone else feels better. You can't go wrong with being kind.

You can actually, it can sometimes hurt one's pride and make them feel somewhat pathetic.

OT:There is no general answer, people do it for different things, some can be rather disturbing but let's not be negative.

We don't like watching others struggle in life when we can help them out. It's out of concern for the other person.

Doesn't a scientific view of it kill things in a way?

So empathy then. Makes sense. And, Octopus....why are you giving every post the thumbs down? :wut:
Yes, that's the word (wow, I'm an idiot). People think we simply get pleasure off of it, but we can also feel pain from not helping as well.

Because humans have a consciousness that is beyond that of an animal. We can see more of the world and empathize more with its denizens.

As to why? Does there have to be a reason? Once you try to justify goodness, then you fail to understand the point.

Someone who is truly good doesn't need a reason to be good. It just goes to show how genuine some people are and how few of them exist.

They feel good. I feel good. I do it to make someone else happy and that also makes me happy. It is a cycle of happiness.

And very, very much this:

I suppose so, but he did ask why we do it :p I'm always of the view that if we understand things on a fundamental level, we come to more of an understanding, and that breeds cooperation.
