They view death as a release. It's somewhat of a reward for them, given how skewed and harsh the shinobi system is.

However, they do not wish to die since many of them want to achieve goals and protect what is dear to them within that shinobi system. If they don't do it, then who will? That's where the reluctance comes in... it's somewhat of a sense of duty.

Because Madara manipulated him and he decided it was his job to improve the current world through horrendous means. He didn't want anyone to feel the same pain he felt when Rin died.
