because its all about friendship power. the guild has been completely outclassed since tenrou island. all enemies from hades till now with the exception of the avatar guild have completely obliterated them and yet they talk about friendship and win.
erza was literally on the ground blind bleeding out and her pain senses amplified to the point that if she touched the ground or anything touched her she would feel the most excruciating pain ever felt and yet after saying some stuff about friends she gets up and one hits with a punch the second in command of the demons who had taken no damage before and wasn't known for being physically weak either.
its a manga for little kids. its worse than naruto and TNJ or even narutos plot shield. worst manga ive ever had the displeasure of reading and i wish i could take it all back but i cant.

mainly these reasons here. I like Fairy tail. But the reasons Punk and others mentioned is why many others hate it. I don't blame them but I personally like it. Not the best anime/manga but it's okay.
The friendship theme has been there since the beginning, it's really your fault for continuing it if it bothers you that much. It's all on you dude. IMO it's much better than Naruto.
OT: It's a really fun series to watch/read. Who cares if people say the series sucks? They're missing out.

First couple episodes were crap and felt like a Filler I was like dafaq then it started off with Lame ass Lucy which was like a Huge Derp.
Picture Naruto starting off with Sakura/Picture One Piece starting off with its lamest character Ussop when he EXTRA annoying in the beginning of OP (Hes became tolerable during the Water Arc)
I only got into it from there Wiki when I was about to quit but I had to know about the Dragons/Zeref and Natsu history
Then theres Laxus he will make you LOVE Fairy Tail

Eveyrone has their own opinion. I have never had a problem, with someone not liking Fairy Tail, but reasons of 99% of them who don't like Fairy Tail are shit, more or less. I like Fairy Tail, it's plot isn't so great, it's full of fan service, hyped characters always lose, and out of mangas I read (Naruto, Bleach, OP, DB, Shaman King) it's worst, still it's chapters are enjoyable with some great humor. Even while I agree that it's not greatest manga, it's pretty much one of my favorite.
I remember having huge debate about critism. I rememeber arguments "Like you are not a fan, since you always shit on it", when I further explained things to tham smarters members got it (you can't explain to plonkler that he is wrong) and they argument was "Oh, I see, when I read chapter I always concentrate on good things (my fav. character, action, humor, Lucy's ass, etc) " which make them enjoy chapter more. I tried that method and really it's great. When you are concentration on good things, it's easier to forgot about bad things in chapter (no story progression, bad humor, bad characterization, Lucy's ass again). I am mainly saying this about other mangas, because when it comes to Fairy Tail, it seems people don't concentrate on good things, which help them forgot about bad things, but they actually concetrate on bad things, which make them forget about good things.
Now to return on their arguments:
It's annoying - I don't know where this is coming from, I can constructive critic Fairy Tail, a lot, but there is no much parts where I can say it's boring.
Nakama power - As part of the shonen, it's logical, this is not valid argument. Point of Shonen mangas is good beats bad, that with your friends you can do everything, you see that motif in Bleach, Naruto, One Piece. They say Natsu always beat bad guy, after his ass being kicked, well I am not so sure how Luffy was able to beat Crocodile (not to mention that this happen in One Piece, probably greates manga ever).
Fanservice - really bad part of the manga. But people who say this, don't really understand what fan service really is. You will see members complain about nudity, but same members will never complain, about Itachi's huge role in War (Naruto) or Byakuya's miraculous survival (Bleach), yes that's also type of fan service and it was just on top of my head.
Rip off - I will not even bother with this one.

Its not a perfect manga, but a lot of the reasons people list, are in pretty much the majority of shounen manga:
Friendship power ups,
bad guys becoming good guys,
standard plot,
and a very simple hero.
So honestly I don't get why if you don't like these traits in a story you would read a Shounen manga at all when these are pretty standard for Shounen manga in general, particularly the part about friendship power ups, all of the big three Shounen manga have the power of friendship theme.
But I actually love it, its fun and its currently my favorite Shounen manga.
You have a main character who isn't completely stupid like Luffy and Naruto, but isn't a world class genius either, simply reckless and ready to charge ahead without even thinking of the consequences.

I just wanted to gather other's opinions on the manga.
A lot of people here listed the reasons they don't like it and they are standard traits of a Shounen manga.
I just don't why people who don't like Shounen plots, would bother reading Shounen manga.
I respect other's opinions and Fairy Tail is far from a perfect manga, but I don't like horror stories, so unless something happens that really temps me otherwise I don't bother watching horror movies.

I think fairytail is probably targetted more for younger readers that why it has so many, "as long as i have my friends I cant lose" lines and that "if i believe in myself, anything is possible!" It has many one track minded characters who in the span of 400+ chapters, none of them have really learnt anything other than friendship is the key to glory. Also their whole set up of magic is a little confusing, Naruto explained character and talks about jutsus and their development a lot whereas fairytail its sorta whatever, cars and transport are used with magic, you can use lacrimas made of anything that can do whatever, and i feel some parts are just lazy like glasses so you can read faster. I also dont have as much feeling towards any of the characters. in Naruto, Naruto and sasuke were orphans, and even rock lee who had a family but wasnt a very good ninja made you really feel for the characters. And gaara who everyone hated, or when jiraiya died! Essentially, most dragon slayers were abandoned by their families, and most of the kids are orphans in fairy tail and have gone through some tragedy, but i dont feel that bad for any of them... Mystogan left and no one really cared

For me, i started reading when it was the end of the tartarus arc so I was able to just read a lot and take it all in, but I dont think im that invested to keep waiting each week for one basic chapter for it to all build up to friendship wins again! I think reading it in a large lump makes it more enjoyable and the fillers and stupid fights wont seem as bad then.
But hey, its better than bleach.

But i always thought this manga delivers fun & entertain with fights.
I don't know there are characters that are most likable gildarts,jellal,laxus,mirajane,kagura,yukino etc
