You are right on that one. I guess that there cannot be something bigger to EMS , but that it can be upgraded with ?patches?, maybe every time you kill someone it becomes stronger? Only reason why constant upgrading of the Sharingan is not so strange in the story is because we know that Madara and Itachi knew how to get powers the rest of Uchihas did not.
