Why do people take credit for what they didn't do??

Why does this happen in Naruto a lot? Although it's blatantly obvious that Kakashi and Itachi died out of stress of mangekyou sharingan during their fight with Pain and Sasuke respectively, people still give Pain credit for killing kakashi and also give sasuke credit for killing itachi. Even Sasuke claimed that he was the one that killed Itachi when he knows that he didn't. Same with Orochimaru and Hiruzen, we know 3rd hokage died cos of the death god but Orochimaru boasts that he's the one that killed him and so do everyone who clearly watched the battle. Am sure that those aren't the only cases, but the question is..why do people do this? Why? Both naruto characters and naruto viewers

well they did kill them because they are the reason they died pain forced kakashi to use the last of his chakra itachi had to use his sharingan to fight sasuke and the 3rd wouldn't have died if orochimaru didn't attack so in a way yes they did kill them.

Why did Kazuyuki Fujita get the victory when Ken Shamrock beat him so hard that Ken started having heart palpitations?
If someone dies while you're fighting them people usually give you credit for it because you caused them do whatever ultimately killed them.

Well I do give credit to pain but not to Sasuke though. Kakashi went into that fight with a clear head and a full healty body. Noone can say that Pain ddnt win fairly

Pain would have killed Kakashi even if he dnt have MS and thanks to MS he is able to extend his lifespan a bit.........
Sasuke would have killed even if Itachi didn't died with his illness since Itachi would let Sasuke to kill him
Oro would have killed Saru even without usng EDO kage ............

They didn't just get up and die. Sasuke caused Itachi to use MS and exhaust himself,(even though it was part of Itachi's plan) and Pain forced Kakashi to use his MS. They are the cause, thus, they take credit for the killing.
