I would just like to point out that they didnt fear madara for themselve it was more that they feard the mayhem and pain that he would cause for the country.
Did they admit he was very poweful? Yes, but neither of them hinted that they couldnt stand a chance against him, the 2nd just wanted to prevent anyone like him appearing again, especially if he wasn't gonna be around to do something about it.
If you would tell them you weregonna put them on an island with madara and they have to battle it out, theyd probably be like, "yeah ok whatever". But its the fact that madara poses a threat to the village and would seek any means to gain power even if it means hurts the people that they fear.
From what we've seen of tobirama's personality thus far, can anyone really picture him afraid of anyone, I mean the guy died sacrificing himself for his team.
Hashi is just too goofy to be afraid. The day he had to go battle madara, he was probably thinking, "that damn madara, always causing trouble, now I have to go deal with his ass" lol just joking, but still im sure he went to that battle with confidence, especially since they met each other in a location safe that was safe to fight without hurting anyone else!

Love this chapter, never really took much note of the 1st, but finding out hes got the personality of naruto, goku and luffy (and a little bit of natsu, although natsu is a bit hot headed, literally and figuratively) just made him one of my favourite.
