Why do people say Danzo was loyal to the leaf village?

Danzo was loyal to one person, himself. If he truly cared about the Leaf Village he would have have his Root ninja and himself defend the leaf village which he didn't do, twice. And why is this reason? he wanted the Hokage dead so he could take the title for himself.

you said it yourself.. he was loyal to the village.. but he thought that current hokage aint protecting the village right way so he wanted to cause mayhem and get the title himself and defend village he's way.

No matter what Danzo did in life, in the end, they were all for Konoha. In the end, Konoha mattered the most to him. He was the Leaf's Danzo Shimura.

Danzo saw Tsunade as a horrible leader and wanted to oust her, so he initially used Pein's attack to make her look weak and ineffectual to try to ger her impeached, so to speak. Pein blowing up the village and her going into a coma were not part of the plan; he thought Pein would see that Naruto wasn't there and leave, and took precautions to stop Naruto from returning.

Danzo was a coldhearted egomaniac, he was however also loyal to the village.

What good is it if you're loyal to the village but not to the villagers. The village is nothing without it's people.

Root worked from the shadows and eliminated threats, they where not the solider type of ninja. Danzo wanted to be Hokage to get more power so he could protect the leaf, though his methods weren't ethical it was all to protect the leaf.
