I used to say Itachi didn't deserve to be called a good guy and get all that praise cus he abused Sasuke and stuff. And what he did wasn't very nice. I think ultimately his story is about looking at the bigger picture, doing bad things for good reasons, even if you do nothing bad things might still happen.
His purpose as a shinobi, outweighed the connection to the clan. He surpassed his pride, his inheritance, his entire love for his family, just to prevent a war, which could have been born, after the Uchiha attacked and weakened the base of Konoha. He is a legend, his way of thinking was many steps ahead, doing things for the collective goodness for everyone. A utilitarian base of philosophy. However, despite everything, despite his immense strength in overcoming his pain, his burden. He couldn't do this to Sasuke. The strongest scene was clearly stated by Fugaku.... "Our pain will only last a second, in difference to you. You should know, I am proud of you. But please, take care of Sasuke". He was indeed... a true hokage.
I think Itachi is cool as hell, but I don't consider all of his actions to be heroic. He murdered his clan to prevent war? admirable. Couldn't kill his brother despite everything and loved him more than the village? heartwarming. Cruelly tormenting and torturing your younger brother, tossing him headfirst into a pitch black hell of pain and hatred all as an act to make him stronger? I'm sorry, but that's ****ed up. He is almoat single handedly responsible for pushing sasuke into darkness and evil, and caused so many problems in doing so. How can anyone support that?
