I understand how badly alcohol reflects on stats but they put alcohol as the third most damaging lifestyle choice behind smoking and obesity. Which is exactly where i'd rank it, still campaigning that it truly isn't that bad. Stats will always reflect badly and look more dramatic than they are, that's not a British issue but simply the nature of percentages and 'alarming' statistics.

Maybe I really am desensitised but they really don't seem like ridiculous odds to me, even if we are higher than other countries. It's hard to imagine anybody here honestly excess drinking themselves into a stomach pump. Only talking personally, I know- but drinking really is a casual and intimate pasttime so I think it's the only way to properly address it, from personal experience.

I don't drink any more but when I did, it was whenever I hanged out with a few marines.
There's some people who will drink for the fun of it and others because they want to escape from reality.

I know an older guy who is a heavy drinker. Drinks every single day when he's not working going through cases of them for years. All because he's only son died and he's wife left him afterwards.

There are some health benefits with moderate alcohol consumption but too much for too long will damage your liver,etc.

I rarely drink and even then I usually only have one or 2 drinks the entire night. But to your original point t. That's a question with many different answers. Most commonly, it's a time honored tradition that dates back for centuries.

While drinking was meant to be a social thing, many people take it to excess. As for the health benefits...there are none. But mankind does many things that are practically poison to our bodies so signaling out alcohol (though I agree with you) is kind of unfair in that regard.

It is wrong perception that people pick up a habit and it has to or it should have anything do with health. People do X thing because they like it. Fermenting and using food has been so common practice.

In modern society they research and changes are forced down in society. So some people do things like, I should do habit X because it is healthy because I am fat.
