On the other hand;

5. and the rest for some arbitrary reason or the other.

Yeah, alcohol numbs pain, but its not like its permanent..... Another minus is, after its effect wears off all those pains you're trying to get rid of returns and more (the hangover).

I drink beer or wine for fun few times in one year, always on the night between years and with a good meal sometimes. If i ever feel dizzy i stop. I never was drunk and i will never be.
Once i had to drink a double refined alcohoolic beverage (60°) to cure a bad stomach ache. It worked 0_O

Is a social habit in my country too to enjoy a beer with friends.
When is too much and ppl get drunk is no more fun and it ruins lifes.
I dont think is cancerous though to drink a real wine, at contrary, is generally known that a small glass of wine at dinner is healthy. Coca cola is much worse for example.

Well firstly, alcohol was banned in the 1920s and that ended up in disaster. Organized crime rose to a whole new level. I'm sure you've heard of Al Capone.

Also I'm currently drunk; just took a full glass, not a shot, a full glass of vodka. If you've ever been drunk before or especially drunk with friends, then you'd know why people drink.

The tittle pretty much says it, why do people drink alcohol?
I mean, its not like people are completely ignorant of how harmful it is, quite frankly its just like willingly consuming poison.
yeah life can be a bit*h, and alcohol offers a getaway from life's woes, but to what avail if its only temporarily?
Think of the humiliating things a well respectable person might do under the influence of alcohol (i've seen a professor pee his pants under it influence)
SO, WHY DO PEOPLE DRINK?

Edit: I don't understand why its consumption is legal, if its up to me, I'd say its just as harmful as narcotics.

The hostility to something as casual as a drink with friends on this forum is some serious culture shock for me.

Guess things are different in Britain and LOL at the kid who thinks its to pathetically 'pick up chicks'. Tell that to me and my guy/girlfriends hitting the club tomorrow night, I hope it's a younger age thing than a cultural thing- because then people feel the need to condescend even more than usual on this site.

Says the guy drinking "90% proof" liquor. And maybe you're just dumb or trying to be cool, but alcohol content percentage and "proof" aren't use together. It's either proof or the percentage, not both, since it's not the same thing.

And you can't really "tell" anything since you're drunk from apple juice.
