Why do people care about their KDR?

I've never played a FPS game online except for some random 3d game on my PC and I found even there people care a whole lot about about their Kill/Death ratio and I don't get why? I wanted to get BF3 for my PS3 so I checked out some gameplay for it and every match the guy commenting would mention their KDR. Is it really that important? I mean why even have KDR in the first place?

whats the point of playing if you aren't trying to win, or at least doing good, and if you don't have a positive kdr the you probably aren't doing good, and you aren't doing good, then how can it be fun, I know I don't like dying a lot in the game

KDR shows how good a person is, but it is not everything.

Its supposed to be an indicator of how "good" you are, even though its really not. Campers have the best kdr's yet there's no skill in hiding in a dark corner with a silencer.

Iv'e seen situations were someone has a bad KDR not because they aren't good but because they're getting raped by someone with better equipment than them. I mean yeah you should do well in the game but for you to say what's the point of playing if your not getting a good KDR is kinda lame.

EDIT: Like dragonborn said Campers have good KDR but aren't the best whats the point in playing if your just worrying about your KDR?

true and that does get annoying, but all you can do is rage quit, stop them from camping or camp yourself, i prefer playing with friends so we can stop the camping together

you could look at it like that, and I guess it depends on the individual because I find camping boring, but in the end if you are just dying a lot then the game can't be fun, and certain equipment is better for certain people, I have seen people do good with just about everything so that's more of an excuse, and sometimes you can be on a bad team but have a good kdr, so if keeping positive is lame, then I guess I am lame, but I have fun lol

My KDR is literal crap. It is just bad, and I'm pretty good.
