I've actually grown fond of Danzō. I probably like him more than Itachi now, but that's for several reasons including the massive wank train Itachi has going. He's still the type of guy that I'd despise in real life, but this is purely fiction.

Yeah. I don't think many people realized the ideologies of Danzō and Itachi were the same either.
There's actually a quote from one of them about ninjas in shadow, and I can never remember which one said it.

Thank god you weren't Itachi.

Because Danzo was basically a ****. Look at what he did to kabuto and his adoptive mother. Look at what he did to Sai and his "brother". Think about what he did to Shisui, that was unwarranted he could have let Shisui at least try his plan but not gouge his eye out like wtf. Danzo pulled a lot of unessessary moves, that negatively affected others' lives.

Kabuto would've been caught, eventually. Going into enemy nations with that much information, he would be a treasure trove for the enemy. It was wrong, but necessary.
Sai and Shin? He turned Sai into a near flawless shinobi. Besides, the way Danzō recruits Shinobi, is it so much worse than the Chunin Exams? Children slaughter each other in gladiatorial combat and in deep dark forests to become ninja. That's the life they live.
No, Shisui should have died and Danzō did the right thing:
Imagine you're an Uchiha who wants the overthrow of the government. Then Shisui, the guy with the mind controlling Genjutsu, comes in and talks to the clan leader, Fugaku. After the meeting, Fugaku has changed his mind. No more coup. How do you react to that?
Shisui would've stupidly ****ed Konoha over if his half baked plan were initiated.
Danzō most certainly negatively impacted other people's lives, but the way of a shinobi is not full of kittens and rainbows. Sacrifices are made for the good of the village and the world.
Did Danzō do awful things? Yes. But they were all, in the end, for Konoha. And many of those awful things preserved the peace and stability of Konoha, exactly what Danzō wanted.

I'm an Itachi fan and I don't hate Danzo.

As a character I thought he was well designed, interesting and great alongside Hiruzen. To represent the darker sider of the Konoha. It was great that Konoha was (rightfully so) "evil" in the eyes of others, from other nations who suffered unjustly at Danzo's hands - in the name of Konoha and maintaining it's status/strength.

Was he an ideal to followed, was he the paragon of shinobi life that Itachi subscribed to?
... eh, no. Not quite.
In the sense of ruthlessness perhaps, in that they are a "tool" - I suppose so. But in essentials they differed quite a bit.

Itachi (& Shisui) were defined by their self-sacrifice, something that Danzo lacked in massive quantities. He was afraid to die, he believed he needed to live in order to lead and better Konoha.

They also had the Will of Fire and deep desire to protect children (Sasuke, the future, prevent war etc), the essence of Hashirama and Madara's dream and the purpose of a village.
Danzo used children in monsterous ways, as fodder to better his own selfish means - not for the good of Konoha as most would see it, but his own twisted perception of it - that without him pulling the strings, to become Hokage he imagined would make Konoha weak and eventually fall.

Danzo was also a massive hypocrite. Though with his death he somewhat redeemed himself, by attempting to take Sasuke (as he deemed a threat to Konoha) with him.

One of Hiruzen's greatest failures - allowing Danzo to be "consumed" by the darkness and allowing him to live... Danzo went out to have a hand in the greatest threats; Akatsuki, Orochimaru, Kabuto, Sasuke.
