Why do boys think this way?

Since I am here, this gives me a chance to ask this question that only a boy could answer.

I have been babysitting this 13 year old boy during the weekends. He has no father so his mother has to work two shifts at the diner every Saturday to make some extra money. His mom is very strict with him and when she leaves she gives him specific instructions on what is can and cannot do that day. She tells me that if he does not behave, then I can decided how he is to be punished. Usually he is pretty good but every once in awhile he acts up. If it is only a small thing, I tell him he has to stay in his room for a time but if he is really bad I give him two choices and he always seems to pick the one that I think is the worse punishment. So since I never can understand how you boys think, maybe you can tell me why he chooses the way he does.

Choice I is that he has to stay in his room for the day and I will tell his mom what he did and tell her that he is to be grounded for two weeks.

Choice II is that I will not tell his mother but I will pull down his pants and spank his bare bottom.

He always takes choice II. I would think that having his pants pull down and spanked is a lot more painful and embarrassing especially when done by me than having to be grounded for two weeks. But, whenever I ask him if he is sure that is what he really wants all he says is: "It's better than grounding".

So here are two questions I have for you.

1. Is a bare bottom spanking really better than grounding?
2. Would you make the same choice if you were in his situation?

Excuse me, but why on earth would you spank (not to mention, bare bottom) a 13 year old, especially when you're the baby sitter? Letting him stay in the room is much better, if these are the only solutions. I'm not even in favor of it if the child's parents do it, but that's their problem. Since you're his baby sitter, you should immediately tell his mother about his behavior (and about the spanking). Then let her decide what's good for her child.

Suppressing the issue of a 13 year old child by spanking his bare bottom is not the solution, at least not an acceptable one.

Do you spank him with a stick or hands?
He knows you won't be too harsh on him and i think that punishment is far better than being grounded for 2 weeks.

Lets not forget the possibility that he might enjoy the second punishment and don't see it as punishment.

It is not embarrassing for him if only you two are at home, maybe if you do it in public he might reconsider the options
