Yamatomo with his bankai is the strongest character, he was killed by juckabach because he stealed his bankai, but he's still the strongest, why didn't he stomp all of aizen's army in one slash with bankai?

the former captain commander was fighting his twin .Who he thought was juha bach . If he didnt spend so much energy and power on the twin . he would have beaten juha bach . as far as aizen ichigo had to beat him because he is ichigo

Because it would have been useless; Aizen already has him trapped in his Kyoka Suigetsu. Aizen would have taken a chhair, ordered an ice tea and let Yamamoto fight me some illusion copy of himself. And when he would have gotten bored, he would have executed Yama-ji

Because Kubo wanted to save Yamamoto's Bankai for this arc.

And Yamamoto has already been shown to have been able to counter Kyouka Suigetsu when he let himself get stabbed by Aizen. He could feel his reiatsu and was able to detect the real one. He could've went Bankai right there, spared us of meaningless banter, and finished him off in one swing of his sword before Wonderweiss even arrived. But, as all storytelling goes, the main protagonist has to defeat the big bad, leaving the strongest character to wallow in his failed efforts.

Or get slaughtered, like he did in this arc.

Because Kubo wanted to save Yamamoto's Bankai for this arc.

Yeah, this pretty much.

There was no need to go bankai, he could defeat Aizen with his shikai, but Wonderweiss came along and complicated things..

Wonderwise sealed the flames of his sword including Bankai. Aizen knew if he'd went bankai he'd be dead before he evolved.
