I'm leaning towards plot as the answer. But why wouldn't he even consider it?

Not so obvious. and the opportunity never presented itself as in Kakashi was never really alone in the instances they encountered each other. Plus it wouldn't be as easy as what Madara did to Kakashi. when they are within close proximity of each other their vision is linked and the power or speed of both Kamui's are increased.

no one is underestimating tobi. But these scenarios you guys put forward don't make for good story telling. If he did what you just proposed then the manga would never have gotten off its feet and would be over in 1 or 2 chapters. Call it plot if you will.

it's pretty obvious, Kakashi would've known it was Obito behind the mask and NOT Madara, the war couldn't have began if folks thought Obito was behind it, and number two the Rinnegan Obito implanted was more powerful anyway

If Obito took his eye back, he would have likely killed Kakashi, preventing all of those problems.

And Obito sucked with the Rinnegan; he would have been better off with DMS.

I believe the anime's depiction does a better job than most of the translators for the manga.

Obito did not need another eye, he did not fight anyone up until he started the war, and after starting the why would he need another Sharingan when he has Rinnegan. Another thing is that I think Obito did not want to kill Kakashi, because he still was his friend.

If we are talking about before he got Rinnengan one reason could be that, he could use izanagi with a random fodder's sharingan rather than his own which contains Kamui.
