Why didnt they die? Chikara arc

Almost all konoha 11 members, got covered by Edo's with Deidara explosions attached to them.
After the explosions, none of the konoha 11 were hurt.
Why?
Did Sai do something? Sakura mentioned him in surprise.
Were the Edo's defect?
How the konoha 11 survived, was not completely clear to me.
Can someone explain to me what happened.

the edo's were defective because bodys were not used, it was a mixture of chakra and snakes. they defected before they could explode with success. hope it helped.

Okay, out of the the options i had doubts for, it is the edo's being defect I see. Yeah it helped somewhat.
Hmm, I still find it weird though.
I can believe the edo's being defect to be the reason for the survival of the konoha 11(not many other explanation around really), however, the explosions of Deidara should be able to explode, no matter if the edo is defect or not. They are not dependant on the Edo I would say and they did cause huge explosions as shown in the episode, yet not one of the konoha 11 had a scratch or burn or anything.
