Kakashi was a member of Team Minato, he clearly has fond memories of Minato, and he probably had the best relationship with Minato of the living characters in the series. However, Naruto had to learn about his parents through internal struggles with Kurama. Why didn't Kakashi tell Naruto about his father earlier?

Kakashi was still a member of Team Minato at age 13, which would have only been a year or two before Naruto was born. It is clear that Minato and Kushina's relationship goes as far back as their academy days. Thus, it can also be assumed that Kakashi knew Kushina, and the same question can be posed for Naruto's mom.

Actually I disagree... I believe Jiraiya had the best relationship with Minato and would question why he never told Naruto, instead of why Kakashi never told him.

And the 3rd Hokage deemed it forbidden to tell Naruto who his parents were because Minato wanted Naruto to be viewed as a hero, he had taken on the burden of the Kyuubi Jinchuuriki... But the villagers never saw it that way.

For plot reasons. Not only that, but anyone who knew Naruto's parents were told to keep it a secret from him.

'Sides, it's better that Naruto learned who his parents were from Minato & Kushina. xd

I know that it was illegal to mention the Kyuubi and Naruto's jinchuriki status, but that law became pretty irrelevant fairly early on in the series. Naruto learned that he was a jinchuriki in chapter two or three and has been able to use his jinchuriki abilities pretty much at will since the Chunin Exams.

The law was not to keep Naruto from knowing who his parents was. The law was meant to keep the general public from openly ridiculing Naruto for being a host. It was also meant to keep Minato's enemies from knowing that he had a son as that would put Naruto's life in danger.

Well Kakashi would have decided in his mind that he will not say anything to him as jiraiya might have advised him not to talk to naruto about these things though thats just a wild guess

here's a similar thread

before you all start blaming plot think about it. if Naruto knew who his parents were he wouldn't had felt that he had to try a little harder than everyone he would've assumed that things should come more natural to him so why bother training..or maybe Kakashi and Jaraiya planned on telling him but decided if they put that "carrot" (Minato's Legend) in front of him they could both produce another like him...

They never told him because it was to protect him from being targeted by other villages for being the fourth's son. The manga backs this up. Minato and the 3rd agreed it should be that way until the time was right.

Also, imo that plan failed as atatsuki came after Naruto for being a host anyway. So they just should have told him from the get go.

Naruto would have resented the Leaf Village if he was told. Remember that very few even knew Naruto was the Fourth's Son and even fewer about how the Fourth Died and his reason for giving Naruto the Nine Tails.

He probably would have turned out like Sasuke.
