Why didn't Danzo step up earlier?

Soo I've always wondered, if Danzo is that big of an evil cunning mastermind as to influence the Daimiyo in his choice of the Rokudaime Hokage (to chose him instead of Kakashi) and if Danzo covets the Hokage hat so much, why didn't he actually become Godaime Hokage?

It would have been easy too, I mean Tsunade was not even in the village at the time, why didn't he step up then?

Any ideas?

He DID try. But he wasnt a better candidate than the Legendary Sanin.

1) Orochimaru is psycho.
2) J-Man declined (to search/fight Oro)
3) White Fang killed himself
4) Uchiha were not trusted, still

I'm sure they would have come to danzo next. But to offer the position to him over someone with Senju heritage is unlikely, the Elders play a big part in choosing Kage. The Sanin were so legendary that they HAD to ask them first. I believe that Danzou would have tried to beat Pein AFTER the village was destroyed and all hope was lost. In comes Naruto the Sage dream killer LOL.

I guess that makes sense, but I still believe that if Danzo wanted to, he could have 'bewitched' the Daimiyo with his little anti-Will-of-Fire monologue even then. It seemed to be quite effective (mostly since the Daimiyo was so pleasently spineless) and with Tsunade not having been in the village for the last ~20 years, it would have been even more convincing.

He can add some bullcrap like 'not knowing anything of the village's affairs, doesn't give a crap about us, where was she during the third shinobi world war, lots of good men died, blablabla', heck even I know what to say if I wanted to steal her Hokage title xD
