Why didn't Danzo make himself a candidate on the Hokage position after Hiruzen died?

Title says it all. After Hiruzen's death, Danzo could have been hokage right? Danzo has shown that he would like to take the hokage position no matter what, so why didn't he try to take it or give his opinion about it after the death of his rival?

Homura and Koharu were checking for Jiraya for the hokage position as if there was no other choice. Even after Jiraya refused, they were complaining as if they didn't want someone else to be hokage. They prefered waiting for Tsunade.

He wasn't introduced into the manga at the time.

Homura and Koharu considered Jiraiya over Danzo.

This is a good question.. Especially as you point out, Hiruzen and Danzo were rivals.

Simple guess. I believe he wanted to stay in the shadows till his time to arise was ready. Or the village elders chose Tusnade first.

Because Jiraiya wouldn't have allowed it.

Maybe he was off away from the village, getting his arm upgraded with senju cells.

Danzo is the last resort as both elders stated that Danzo back-ups Hiruzen from the insides. And during tsunade tenure, danzo starts to show some of his true intentions. No plot hole, just at during hiruzen departure, Danzo still analysing his tactical approach.

He was afraid of coming out of the shadows. Every powerful shinobi who knew about his true nature and could reveal it and destroy Danzo's reputation was alive. Obito, Orochimaru (he worked with him but at the end of the day Oro only cares for himself), Itachi. Jiraiya and Tsunade were against him probably. It's no wonder Danzo chose Tsunade's coma to emerge. She was the last shinobi who posed a great threat to him.

Elder's choice. They must've known of Danzo's devious ways and left him as a last resort.

Because it would have been irrelevant. Jiraiya had returned! He was Sarutobi's first choice for Hokage. All other options go out the window. The elders knew of this and they approached him.
