the sage himself never said he view indra's way to peace as wrong , I think he just favored Ashura's method more.
He seem to still favor ashura method thou, but he doesn't want to selfishly choose Asura again for his own personal beliefs.

I think this time he wants the two of them to choose for themselves.

It sounded like when the sage choose asura, the sage gave asura power, could this be why asura won, It could be that whenever they would fight both asura and indra, they would have a draw. but if the sage decided to give asura power then asura would be more stronger than indra, and that could be the reason why indra lost.

It was never specified when he gave Ashura power before the fight. The only thing that was said in relations to Ashura vs Indra was that Ashura was equal to Indra through hard work and other people's help.

And yes, Hagoromo pretty much wanted to be fair by least give both of their transmigrants power.

not to everyone, some people on here question why he gave sasuke power when he knew his answer. just clearing up on why i think he did it for them.
