Whitebeard's words: shanks already was yonkou tier back then. It's almost confirmed that he could use Armament Haki, so why did'nt he just use armament haki on his arm for a beast like that? He just, apparently, used conquerors haki instead of armament haki, that just does not make any sense. It wasn't a strong sea-monster, luffy pre-timeskip defeated him with his weakest punch
Is this the first Oda's plot-error or Am I not seeing something like he was too busy using his haki to allow him to move in the water?

I found this question on a site and I quite agree with some of the answers there. And from some multiple answers I framed my answer.

But I am just excited to get some responses from the base. :D

In the early stages of One Piece, Oda's editors told him One Piece wasn't interesting enough so he cut off Shanks' arm. I say it was a mistake since One Piece was originally supposed to end in 2002 as a pure kid's manga. When Oda changed the course of One Piece 1999, he was in quite the dilemma. I recall Oda giving a HORRIBLE LIE in an SBS when asked about Shanks' arm. He something along the lines of "it happens."

Shanks offered his arm for the future of Luffy?
Shanks had a feeling that Luffy was more important than his arm, that's how i understand it(?)

Pretty much this. One of Oda's few faux pas.

Do you even read, bro?

EDIT: Just saw that you wrote sth.

Yea, probably a mistake. Shit happens, I guess.
Oh my god the ****ing irony

The manga didn't state that he wagered it on luffy, did it?

I know the anime did.

I came to this conclusion a while back, even though it may not be canon.

You don't need armors Haki to wreck that weak sea king

He wasn't admiral level back then and I'm sure Oda can fix this up easily once we get a flashback of Shanks at some point. It's not that hard.

Dude like seriously! Keep that "admiral level" wank out of my thread :|. Also he could control his Haoshoku so I don't see why he could not use armament.

Wow, someone got defensive? Relax, I refuse to call someone yonko level. He could of awakened it at that moment, it's possible.

Because he would be too OP and the manga would have had to be renamed Shanks. Its like Kishi gave Itachi AIDS
No the two situations are different. Itachi having a terminal illness and on verge of death bit was a typical Kishi ploy to reduce the guilt of fratricide on Sasuke. I guess one brother had enough of such guilt to carry so he dies due to his own illness in the end. Why bring that up here...I don't see the context..

PS: Assuming it was AIDS when the manga didn't suggest anything like that is not that clever a remark either. Only hostile attitude towards a well written character.

lol you know this was among the first thing which came to my mind when I was catching up with OP back in 2012. It's a running for 18 years. A few retcons or misses are inevitable. It's kind of too late to fix somethings. Happens.

Dude it was mistake....well it became a mistake when Oda changed the course of One Piece in 1999. One Piece was supposed to end in 2002 so Shanks' arm turned into a plot hole. Shanks already said that he simply bet it, aka gave it up, for a new age.

Alos, I do believe Shanks dueled with the WSS Mihawk over and over again before he lost his arm.
