Hiruzen saw the darkness in Orochimaru when Oro was just a kid but he just ignored it/refused to believe it (he loved him too much).

i don't believe that "something" specific triggered Oro to be the way he is (evil), it's just that his view of the world is all about him having more power/gaining knowledge and he will use any method to achieve that (we consider this as being evil/selfish but to oro it's justifiable, his right).

he is a classic villain (bad/evil for no obvious reason) which is awesome/my favorite villain in this series (i don't need to know every little detail/reason to why he acts like that).
