Why did Obito **** with the hidden mist?

did he just want to prove to himself that humanity was hopeless and anyone could be manipulated into darkness like him? Like he tried to do with Naruto when slaughtering people with Bijuu Bombs and wood spears during the war. He just wanted to see others break and become apathetic monsters. Or maybe he wanted revenge for them being involved in Rin's demise. Or both.
