Why did Obito temporarily leave the Akatsuki?

After the nine tails attack and the Uchiha massacre, why did Obito 'leave' the akatsuki? And another question why did he rejoin as his goofy 'Tobi' persona instead of revealing from the start that he was Madara?

I don't think he was formally in it until that point (when he joined as tobi). Nagato was a leader who was following obito's plan. Obito most likely just met up with him time to time.

Wrong! Obito wasn't part of Akatsuki, at the Nine-Tails attack.

Oh, wait. . . sorry my bad. He could have been in Akatsuki at that time, but he never left.

For one, he never left the Akatsuki; he stayed hidden from the other Akatsuki members. Nagato and Konan had always been aware of his existence

EDIT: Like the above said, I don't believe he was in it in it if you get what I'm saying; he had ties with Nagato throughout though.

After the Nine Tails attack, Obito was busy controlling the 4th Mizukage and Kirigakure. The Akatsuki was formed by Yahiko, Nagato and Konan. Obito (known as Madara at this point) came a bit later and he managed to manipulate Nagato.

Obito managed to convince Nagato and Konan that he was Madara, the one who gave Nagato the rinnegan. So Obito became a leader behind the scenes

He became Tobi when the Akatsuki decided to make their move (Kazakage arc) plus there was the fact that Orochimaru had left the Akatsuki and they needed another member.

Konoha gets attacked by a masked man...akatsuki has a masked that looks just like him... Entire konoha would attack akatsuki the only ones that survive is probably Tobi and nagato

Madara gave Nagato Rinnegan > Madara Died > Obito met up with Yahiko & Nagato to make Akatsuki > Nagato made it > Yahiko died > Nagato transformed > He started recruiting strong only shinobi > Obito kept track of those and made contact w/ Nagato later on > 12 years later he joined ' Akatasuki ' since no one except Nagato, Yahiko, Zetsu and Konan knew him from when they were young.

Nagato was face of akatsuki . Obito controlled things from behind the scene . After sasori died obito took his spot as deidera partner . Only nagato and konan knew Tobi was ( madara ) at that time

IMO, he didn't publicly join the organization because he didn't want to be close to Itachi.

(Obito implies Itachi had tried to kill him before, and said Itachi could succeed if he had more info. So he stayed clear.)
