Why did Obito help Sasuke EMS?

I thought originally it was something to do with Sasuke becoming a vessel for the Juubi?

Yes. He was trying to make Sasuke a vessel for juubi by merging him with Gedo Mazou. He himself said the biggest thing which had happened from the creation of akatsuki is that he was able to win sasuke over. This further proves Sasuke is also an uzumaki lineage member as only then would he have the lifeforce necessary to survive the gedo life energy extraction as it did to nagato. Uzumaki is the relative of Uchiha, and distant relative of Senju.

It was either sync sasuke to the statue (like tobi did himself) or give him Ems. It's the lesser dangerous of the two so he won't become too powerful enough to be controlled.
