Why did Neji scoff at Lee?

When Lee said he was going to be a ninja using only Taijutsu Neji laughed at him. It's not like Neji's fighting style is so different. I mean besides the 360 degree vision which really only helps you see your surroundings better.

Neji doesn't only use Taijutsu. I take it you don't have a clear understanding of Neji's abilities for you to make that post. The Hyuugas have excellent chakra control, something Lee lacks. He can release chakra from every pore of his body while most are only able to channel it through their hands and feet thus allowing him to use kaiten. In part 2 he can channel that chakra at a long range using his air palm attack. Also he's able to destroy anything made from chakra which allowed him to free himself from Kidomaru's webbing. Had Lee been in that situation he would have stayed trapped.

Answer: Because Gentle Fist is a form of Nin-Taijutsu, it uses both Taijutsu, mixed with Ninjutsu. On top of that, Neji also has a Doujutsu, at the time believed to be the Strongest. With toughs factors in place, this made Neji feel that someone that only uses basic Taijutsu could never stand up to a Ninja like himself

Neji was also a bit like Sasuke he was top of the class in the acadamy and simply thought lee could never be a ninja if he couldn't use ninjutsu. However I don't think it was Naruto that changed his outlook on Lee but you see his opinion of lee change when he fought Gaara in the chunnin exams after he opened those gates he almost couldn't believe what he was seeing.

If Lee was in that situation he would have opened the five gates. Kidomaru doesn't have the speed feats to counter this. Neji doesn't have the speed feat to counter that. I understand Neji's abilities quite well and actually. I just don't see how he can say Lee couldn't be a ninja when Neji doesn't use Ninjutsu or Genjutsu that often either.

Gentle fist is catergorized under Taijutsu. Like strong fist, its a form of martial arts, the key differences is the users of gentle fist forcefully insert their chakra into your body to damage your insides. It's his use of Kaiten and Air palm that are most Ninjutsu like but you can call them Taijutsu too for some reason same as Kiba's fang over fang. There are array of advantages Neji has over Lee with just the abilities granted by Byakugan alone topped with being a genius who has been blessed with the most Hyuuga talent. And no Lee couldn't have just used gates at that time against Kidomaru because he had just recovered. He didn't even use it when he was fighting Kimimaro and had to be rescued by Gaara.

Its not a matter of Neji using Ninjutsu often its just that Lee can't. And in the Naruto world a ninja that can't use ninjutsu is like a cop without a gun and handcuffs or a Fire fighter without a fire hose. Luckily Lee has the 8-gates to compensate for that. It should be no suprise why Neji looked down on Lee. He was a firm believer in destiny back then and believed Lee would always be a failure no matter how hard he tried. The situation mirrors the way Sasuke was the top of his class while Naruto was at the bottom.
