In the recent manga, Madara loses his arm after being struck by the beasts' tail attack, but it seems it wasn't due to their attack.

First of all, how could a blunt strike sever his arm? Their tails are far too large and wide to slice off his arm so cleanly, and even if they could, why was it just that arm instead of any other limb?

Second, his arm was removed from the dust a few moments after the strike landed, so it seems pretty feasible that he removed his arm himself instead of it being severed by their attack.

Am I the only one that presumes this? If not, what are your theories on his decision to sever his own arm? The only practical reason I see for him to do so is so that he would be able to gain more Senju DNA through the clone's arm to increase his Senju chakra/wood-style potential.

I thought the same way you did and am pretty sure that Madara did in fact severe his arm and it wasn't cut off by the Bijuu tails (as you mentioned the cut was way too clean ) I have no possible theory as to why he did what he did except for the same thing you're thinking which is to boost his Senju DNA possibly to help with controlling the Jyuubi and also because when Obito controlled it for a breif moment the Jyuubi took over as the dominant personality before Obito gained control ( ).

Knowing Madara he would most likely want to by pass losing control of the Jyuubi and wouldn't want to take any more risks considering how close he is to fulfilling his plan which is might be why he upped his Senju DNA
