Why did Itachi not try to kill Tobi

Didn't Tobi apparently have some sort of "secret" that Itachi didn't know about?

Itachi wanted to fight Sasuke and die then and there, why risk taking damage or getting himself killed before.

they did not trust each other though and kept secrets regarding their powers, jutsus, etc, which also means that both Tobi and Itachi would have major disadvantages in a fight and both would take serious damage, it's more a question of who would be taken out first. and due to Itachi's illness probably Tobi would get the upper hand.

ps. Itachi is a proficient sharingan user who also happens to be an Uchiha AKA born with a sharingan. he obviously has better chances against Tobi than Naruto, Kakashi and Gai as he understands sharingan related techniques better. just saying that sometimes understanding your opponent can be far more important than having amazing firepower, not that he lacks in that department either.

itachi was a selfish evil fool. did he really think an amaterasu trap was enough?
and he wanted to die at sasukes hands rather than acting like a good guy and doing actual damage to akatsuki while he still could. or he could actually focus on gathering intel on obito and give it all to konoha so THEY could defeat him. instead kakashi and the others were forced to painstakingly figure it all out completely by themselves

itachi could have beaten obito, even obito himself said that "even itachi doesnt know everything about me, or else i would have been dead long ago" the only reason i can think of why itachi didnt do anything was because obito knows too much about madara and seems to posses some of madara power so itachi probably thought he doesnt stand a chance.

He didn't kill/fight him because he didn't need to. They teamed up and took out the Clan, and while Tobi had his own reasons for doing so, the bottom line is that Itachi had his own as well... to save Konoha.

He didn't kill him while he was in the Akatsuki simply because he didn't have a reason to. He wasn't aware of Tobi's moon-eye plan, so he had no motive, nor was he aware that he would try and harm Sasuke in the future.

He didn't kill him while he was in the Akatsuki simply because he didn't have a reason to.

akatsuki was full of s-class criminals and obito flat out told itachi he has a grudge against not just uchihas but all of konoha (playing up the madara image a little too well). so basically what he has standing in front of him is konohas greatest threat. but instead of properly spying on him and do things that can lead to his defeat, he just flat out tells obito his allegiance which puts obito on guard for a backstab. the most idiotic thing he could have done at that point. moreover he was there when pain explained their plans to use monopoly to start world wars and control the world. and did nothing about it

They were both playing a chess match with each other when it came to Konoha. This is a match that Tobi won over Itachi in that regard. Itachi was a double agent for Konoha and Itachi didn't think Tobi knew that. Itachi true motives were to join the Akatsuki and gain information about them while at the same time try and protect Konoha. Tobi already explained this about Itachi. The only people Itachi thought knew that he was a double agent was Danzou, The 3rd Hokage and the elders. He didn't know that Tobi knew that much about him. This is why when Nagato asked Itachi if he knew more about Akatsuki true motives and Itachi replied saying he "thought" he know more then he(Nagato) did.

Itachi didn't attack Tobi for a huge obvious reason. It was because Itachi knew that Tobi was the true leader of Akatsuki and if he killed(hypothetically) Tobi then Itachi will have had to fight the entire Akatsuki by himself which is suicide. His goal was to gain information about Akatsuki and plan ahead. But of course Itachi had gotten very sick and his life was coming to an end so he used the rest of his life to try and save Sasuke which was his ultimate motives. He wanted to give Sasuke the MS and EMS so that he could obviously have the power to defeat Tobi if the time came. This would explain why he kept baiting Sasuke into learning about the MS and the EMS. Also he planned ahead that if Sasuke were to use his eyes vs Naruto then the crow will activate.

Someone is butt hurt... Read the manga. Tobi and Itachi states that Itachi was a double agent to protect Konoha. Itachi and Tobi states that he didn't want Tobi to gain Sasuke. Tobi and Itachi states he wanted to give Sasuke the MS and further on the EMS(this is why Itachi told Sasuke about the EMS in thier battle to bait Sasuke into taking his eyes after he died).
