Itachi wanted to see how strong sasuke had become, I also think deep down itachi wanted to fight his brother, everytime itachi and sasuke fought itachi negged, with Itachi close to death I don't think he's ever had a real battle since most of itachi's opponents are killed, Tsukyomi negged, or they are too strong. Though Itachi is a pacifist I still believe deep down he wanted to fight his brother as an equal well as equal as equal can be but he wanted to see sasuke's progress, he was going to die anyway from the Kimmamaru sickness, so might as well go down fighting.
Tbh, I don't think I can recall it ever stating that it was both sets they needed. It never really went into detail beyond obtaining a "replacement" set of Mangekyo Sharingan from a relative (as far as I can recall, anyway ). Unless you could provide a scan where it states or implied that both the blind and "replacement" eyes are needed. I guess you could say the pattern is proof, but it really isn't with manga logic. :hmm:

I don't remember it being defined just as a simple "replacement "set. Scans please. Even Madara and Izuna didn't do it despite being a powerful MS users and wanting more power to fight the Senjus. EMS doesn't seem to be a very common occurrence despite many MS users being mentioned even in previous days. So either all these Uchihas were morons not to figure out this simple trick or it wasn't possible by switching only.
More importantly-Doesn't the EMS merge the designs of the transplanter and the transplantee's original Mangekyo?
Also, Madara the only person with EMS was using a two headed Susano with four pairs of eyes.
Anyway it's been some time but the topic had been discussed variously in old days at NB. Try searching for it and you will find some good arguments for and against it.

You're correct, I just labelled it that. Itachi called Sasuke's his "Spare" when he was acting the antagonist.

I just likened spare to replacement.
I know, you could argue that they weren't even aware of the fact that implanting a new set of eyes would make them Eternal. Madara was after all the first to gain EMS, to our knowledge. But you could argue that the Naka Shrine (That is that tablet, right? :|) said about it.
That is true, but I don't think that necessarily means much considering it's a manga. I mean, both things sound really weird. It's either the eyes merge? Or patterns combining upon a new set being implanted. Both sound as far-fetched as the other. XD
Itachi's was shown with four eye sockets, well, the Genjutsu/figure thing. In saying that about Madara's, shouldn't Sasuke's have been the same? :hmm:
I think these two scans lean more towards the fact that it is merely replacing the eyes, but it's still iffy.

I agree, and have been apart of some of the discussion in the past.
Anyway, I think there is simply too little evidence to come to a complete conclusion, so you can only speculate. I guess we'll leave it there.
