Why did Itachi join Akatsuki?

I was wondering why Itachi joined Akatsuki and started working against Konoah like capturing the 9-tails. After all he annihilated his own clan for the protection of Konoah.

It was not his aim, but I am wondering about this too.

He joined in because he was wanted in konoha all because Danzo forced him to kill his whole clan for the protection of the village and Itachi joined akatuski also to keep an eye on his younger brother, Sasuke.

He did it to keep an eye on the organization, and he went to konoha to let danzo know That he (Itachi) was still alive... so that danzo would stay away from Sasuke, read the manga where tobi explains this to Sasuke. Also I think Itachi might've known that their are skilled people in Konoha so that they can stop him and Kisame from capturing Naruto.. therefor making Itachi and Kisame fall back for that time being, hope this helps I'll provide you the link in just a moment!

I've been wondering myself. The obvious answer is that he wanted to protect konoha by keeping an eye on the organization.

However, being in the organization he'd have to help them get the tailed beast, but if he wants to protect konoha he can't capture Naruto, so he'd have to go easy on them. But then wouldn't the organization know he was holding back? And then question his loyalty? Idk all the answers myself...

The only thing I can really think of the akatsuki in regard to sasuke, is just to fuel his growth.

He joined Akatsuki to keep an eye on them and to slowly hinder Tobi's master plan.

Itachi continually and purposefully put off capturing the Kyuubi so that Konoha could take proper measures. He kept an eye on Tobi and kept his plan in a stalemate. As long as Itachi was alive Tobi couldn't move forward with his plan.

Had Itachi not been there Naruto would have been captured years ago and Tobi's Moon's Eye Plan would already have been accomplished.
