When Jiraiya fights pain (in what is arguably the best fight in the series), Jiraiya must summon the toad sages Fukasaku and Shima in order to enter sage mode (being that his mastery of senjutsu is inferior to naruto's).
During the fight, it takes Jiraiya several minutes to summon the 2 toads. During this time, Jiraiya has to keep both of his hands together. It is never explained why.
I know that the larger a creatures/person is, the more difficult it is to summon. However, it may depend of size of their CHAKRA instead.
I can't imagine the 2 toad sages having significantly more chakra than Gamabunta (whom Jiraiya can summon in an instant).
Also, the naruto of the summoning is different. Rather than slamming his hand down to complete the summon, it is completed after he has held together he hands long enough.
While i'm on the topic, there are some ambiguities i'd like to address about the summoning jutsu in general (i might make a separate thread eventually). Is a scroll necessary for the summon? I know that the scroll must be signed at some point by both parties, but does the scroll need to be present to do the jutsu? We've seen kakashi use scrolls before, but we've also seem him do it without the scrolls. We've seen people like Jiraiya and Orochimaru swipe blood over a seal on their bodies before completing the summon. I know that the "contract" is different from the actual seal that forms when doing the summoning jutsu, but what are the circumstances revolving when and where the contract or the physical seal are needed?

It takes Muu (albeit a 50% power Muu) several minutes to summon Madara
