but nobody knew it in part one. they called him an evil monk spirit and never addressed as ichibi and he didnt recognize kyuubi in their fight though that was transformation. then in first arc of part 2 it was all revealed he was a bijuu part of a set of 9. it was a huge ass retcon by kishi that he decided on at some point.
