Why Couldn't Tobirama Reverse Edo Tensei?

I've been rereading the first part of naruto manga and have been discovering a number of inconsistencies (which are to be expected) but Kishi usually does an alright job at bringing everything together at the end.

However, there is one thing i cannot understand:

We all know that Madara was able to resist edo tensei, but not much of an explanation was given. Essentially, its understood that he defied the jutsu because he knows about the jutsu and knows the seals that is uses

This seems logical enough, but if this is true, then why didn't the Second Hokage reverse the edo tensei on himself while fighting hiruzen? I know that Orochimaru/Kabuto made alterations to the Edo Tensei, but Madara would not know about these changes. If he could do it, surely it would follow that Tobirama would too

I will say that Madara came up with Edo-Tensei, Tobirama tried to developed it.. Orochimaru mastered, Kabuto surpassed the edo tensei.. just giving wild theories here..

I don't know, Hashi and Tobirama were sentient long enough to say "sorry monkey, but it looks like we're gonna have to fight you" and if i were someone who made a jutsu that could bring back the dead, i'd be like "holy crap i've been brought back from the dead to fight my old student. Luckily i know the inner working of the technique because i created it. I have an idea, i'm gonna NOT reverse the technique"

He wasn't controlled from the get-go. He had like a solid minute before Orochimaru put the talisman in his head.
