I can't quite fully recall correctly the timeline from the first half of the grandline, but the time between Ace getting captured and Blackbeard somehow stealing the Gura Gura fruit seems a bit too short for Blackbeard to not have already had the capability to take devil fruits... So why would he not take Ace's which is seen to have such power?

Was this early thinking on Oda's part or do you think it could possibly have been due to Blackbeard not being able to take the same fruit as what he already has, would be an interesting hint onto what the backstory of Blackbeard is.

Regardless if he took it for himself or not, he's still out there accumulating devil fruits and Aces should have been first on the list and not having to send Burgess to go get it from Doffy.

It's highly possible that Blackbeard just didn't want that DF..

It might also have something to do with him only being able to have one Logia, one Paramecia, and one Zoan..

It might also have something to do with him only being able to have TWO DF's so he had to pick his 2nd one very wisely, and he chose the fruit that once belonged to the WSM WB, not to mention his former Captain.. it had a lot of meaning behind it..

It might have been something that he was testing out for the first time ever so he wanted to risk it on something really good..

Idk.. There are a lot of possibilities as you can tell.. lol

I can't wait for Oda to give us some more information on Blackbeard though!

I think it's a pretty good insight and also a good back up as to some theories being him having some sort of multiple personality thing, whether it be the chimera DF or what not...

And he did go for it, he sent Burgess to go and win it in the coliseum... He's also collecting all devil fruits... He knew Ace was up for execution so whatever method he uses for stealing devil fruits, surely he'd have gone for the mera mera no mi or show some sort of want of it :/

Thinking about it a tad more I'm just gonna put it down to Oda not fully anticipating where he was going with certain storylines.

That kinda ties into what I was saying about how maybe it was his first time trying it out.. it probably wasn't until after MF that he was able to start perfecting his methods on stealing DF's .

As of now, he's collecting DF's for his crew.. but at that time he was probably just like "let me try this idea out and see if it works.. if it's possible, then after this we're going to start stealing a whole bunch of powerful fruits."

But idk.. it could be a number of reasons.

I think the technique Blackbeard uses takes the fruit into his own body. There is not much use to have 2 logia's in one body, so Whitebeard's fruit is a better addition to his arsenal than Ace's fruit.

The only other way to obtain the Mera no mi for someone in his crew is to wait for Ace to die, let the fruit respawn, track it down and steal it. And that is exactly what they did for 99% of the way.
